“Nothing,” Jacob said, very carefully, the next day when they all met in the cannon room.

“Nothing,” Harold repeated, glassy-eyed and exhausted. He had slept since they last met, but it had not been enough. Anna hadn’t spoken to him, and he heard a rumor that she had dined with the captain the night before. As far as he was concerned, this was turning into the worst journey in existence and there was no way out of it. “You are sure? You went through his whole file?"

“The whole file,” Jacob confirmed. “And there was nothing there that would make me raise an eyebrow.”

“But that can’t be right,” Harold started.

“Why not?” he asked. “I tend to think that even the coincidence says otherwise.”

“But the evidence does not say otherwise,” Archibald said. “Someone can tell the truth about their life and still lie about other things.”

“Perhaps we are just suspicious because we have so many new crewmembers,” Dathers said, at last. “After all, it has been a while since we have had new crewmembers.”

“I suppose we will have to keep looking,” Harold said.

“Perhaps,” Archibald said. “Or we can just corner him and ask.”

“I do not think we should do that,” Harold replied. “That would not result in a favorable outcome.”

“How many times have we done something that hasn’t resulted in a favorable outcome, and we’ve always come out on top?”

“I don’t know if that is a possibility this time,” Harold replied. “But let’s just keep our eyes peeled.”

They heard a noise, and they all jumped. Lyles looked up at the ceiling and then sniffed. He had always worked part time in the mess hall and he could practically smell when the meals were ready, and they needed him to take a meal to the captain or other high-ranking officers.

“I’ll see you lads later,” Lyles said. “The captain will nearly bite my head off if I am late.”

“Then let’s hope that you are not late,” Harold said and stepped aside. The rest of them paused for another moment and then decided to separate. It was best, especially with an escalating situation, to not be found huddled together and discussing things that could be considered distressful.

Harold briefly thought about going to find Anna, but he did not think he could do that right now. She had looked so hurt when he had suggested they were friends, and he didn’t know what else to say to make it better.

Perhaps Jacob would come across something in the records that made it easier. He knew that sailor records were often inaccurate, and he knew there was a chance Bracebridge had faked the whole thing. Somehow, though, he didn’t think Jacob would find anything amiss.

Instead of going down to Anna’s cabin, Harold went to his own. The wardroom was empty; he assumed Archibald had gone to talk to someone else instead of sleeping. Harold was about to settle down to have a moment or two by himself, when Lyles suddenly appeared at his door.

“I thought you were going to go and take the captain's meal to him?” he asked.
